April 16, 2020
Dear Columbus Families,
Today Governor Evers during his media briefing extended the Safer at Home Order until 8 am Tuesday, May 26, 2020. In addition, he ordered all public and private K-12 schools to remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
The Columbus School District has been planning and preparing for such an order. Our staff has created a virtual learning environment to meet the needs of your students and to collaborate with families. Please continue to reach out with administrators and teachers to ensure effective communication.
Governor’s Evers announcement today allows the District and families to focus on several things:
1). Inspiring our student everyday to stay engaged and focused on their virtual learning in the 2019-20 school year.
2). Recognizing the Class of 2020 through activities/strategies for their academic and other various achievement
3). Planning for a safe, seamless, and celebratory return for students and staff in the 20-21 school year.
As reminders, please review the following information:
During these times of uncertainty and the rapidly developing changes, we will have a limited number of staff in our buildings. We will continue to provide you updates on COVID-19 and District developments on the Health Resources tab on the District webpage. www.columbus.k12.wi.us.
If you need any assistance during this closure, please contact your child’s building principal:
Columbus Elementary/Discovery Charter School, Mrs Beth Hellpap
Columbus Intermediate/Middle School, Mr Loren Glasbrenner
Columbus High School, Mr Thomas Fischer
The District is providing food services during the school closure. Free grab and go breakfast and lunches may be picked up at three sites throughout the city and at the CIS/CMS main entrance between 6:45 and 9:00 am every day. We will transport the free grab and go lunches via our regular morning bus routes to all families who would like to participate. Please sign up via firstname.lastname@example.org.
IT Support for Virtual Learning
All students in Columbus have a district-assigned device. Students in K-5 have a combination of IPads and Chromebooks and students in grades 6-12 have Chromebooks. As support during the Continuity of Learning Plan (Virtual Learning for students), parents, students and staff can get tech support on district owned devices or tools by e-mailing email@example.com or calling 920-623-5950 x2222. Please leave a detailed message if you get voice mail.
If you need access to the internet, the District will supply hot spots free of charge. Please contact Chet Bembenek at 920-623-5950.
Continuity for Learning Plan
Teachers will be receiving additional professional development and completing lesson plans the remainder of this week to ensure the educational services for our students remain consistent throughout this school closure. Please look to receive more information from your student’s principal and teachers for instruction to begin March 30th.
Governor Evers stated, “Returning to our new normal will be a slow process.” The Columbus School District asks our families and community to continue to show moments of kindness and support as we work together to find understanding of the full impact of the pandemic.
